“To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never, to forget.”
– Arundhati Roy, The Cost of Living

We remember her photo. But of course unlike us she looks much older now. Last summer I saw her photo accompanying a piece she had written about Israel that was pretty ugly, with little sense of context. But I do like the use of the word “lair.” nice stand alone quote.

I don’t know much about her personal politics, but yes this quote (as a stand alone) hit home for me, especially for September 11.
Always a treat to see a comment from you Gloria, thank you. I hope you are well.
