Above the mountains
the geese turn into
the light again
Painting their
black silhouettes
on an open sky.
Sometimes everything
has to be
inscribed across
the heavens
so you can find
the one line
already written
inside you.
Sometimes it takes
a great sky
to find that
first, bright
and indescribable
wedge of freedom
in your own heart.
Sometimes with
the bones of the black
sticks left when the fire
has gone out
someone has written
something new
in the ashes of your life.
You are not leaving.
Even as the light fades quickly now,
you are arriving.
from House of Belonging by David Whyte
Love, love, love this. A long-time favorite.

It’s funny. Two of my favorite poems in the world are both titled “The Journey.”
(I have that other saved to share later, but if you’re curious….it’s Mary Oliver.)

You turned me on to his speaking voice. 🙂
he’s fun to listen to on headphones with the lights turned low. I imagine the voice of God and David Whyte sound very similar. 🙂

It’s a wonderful poem. I’ve shared it with all my close friends who’ve gone through a bad time.

I’m glad you like it, Matti. Whyte’s work is so inspiring. He’s one of my favorites, and is a reader favorite too. His “Sweet Darkness” (posted last year) is still consistently in the top recent reads.
