February Seven by The Avett Brothers

I went on the search for something true
I was almost there when I found you
Sooner than my fate was wrote
A perfect blade, it slit my throat
And beads of lust released into the air
When I awoke you were standing there

I was on the mend when I fell through
The sky around was anything but blue
I found as I regained my feet, a wound across my memory
That no amount of stitches would repair
But I awoke and you were standing there

There’s no fortune at the end of the road
That has no end
There’s no returning to the spoils
Once you’ve spoiled the thought of them
There’s no falling back asleep
Once you’ve wakened from the dream
Now I’m rested and I’m ready and I’m ready to begin

I went on the search for something real
Traded what I know for how I feel
But the ceiling and the walls collapsed
Upon the darkness I was trapped
And as the last of breath was drawn from me
Light broke in and brought me to my feet

There’s no fortune at the end of the road
That has no end
There’s no returning to the spoils
Once you’ve spoiled the thought of them
There’s no falling back asleep
Once you’ve wakened from the dream
Now I’m rested and I’m ready and I’m ready to begin

I’m rested and I’m ready to begin

  1. I *love* this song. It’s anchors my favorite running playlist. The version in the video is great, love the jangly piano, the cello, and the ethereal quality of the vocals. So apropos.

    1. Ooh, I haven’t tried running to it yet, but I bet it’s awesome. Adding it to my list, thanks!

Not sure if you or your husband are Randy Travis fans, but Randy and The Avett Bros did a set together as part of CMT’s Crossroads series in 2012. I’ll try to embed the February Seven performance: FAIL 😉

The direct link to watch is: http://www.cmt.com/videos/misc/854704/february-seven-from-cmt-crossroads.jhtml

Lots of talk about the meaning behind the lyrics (infidelity, addiction, maturity), but I haven’t found anything concrete. As The Avett Bros are a sober band, I like to think it’s a song about addiction and that Feb 7 is a sobriety date. Just a guess, but that’s how I listen to it.

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed! I shared the link to the actual performance above if you wanted to see them on stage together.

I hope today is a special day for you, whatever significance it has. I’m drinking coffee while I finalize tomorrow’s weekend post (you’ll be very pleased), so I’ll toast you with my Dark Italian Roast. 🙂 Excited about next week too! I’ll be ready to shift gears after we publish tomorrow. Happy Feb. 7! xo

(edit by CW… but I couldn’t edit out Daryl. That would just be wrong.)
