bluebird
by Charles Bukowski
there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I’m too tough for him,
I say, stay in there, I’m not going
to let anybody see
you.
there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I pour whiskey on him and inhale
cigarette smoke
and the whores and the bartenders
and the grocery clerks
never know that
he’s
in there.
there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I’m too tough for him,
I say,
stay down, do you want to mess
me up?
you want to screw up the
works?
you want to blow my book sales in
Europe?
there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I’m too clever, I only let him out
at night sometimes
when everybody’s asleep.
I say, I know that you’re there,
so don’t be sad.
then I put him back,
but he’s still singing a little
in there, I haven’t quite let him
die
and we sleep together like
that
with our
secret pact
and it’s nice enough to
make a man
weep, but I don’t
weep, do
you?

“I felt like crying but nothing came out. it was just a sort of sad sickness, sick sad, when you can’t feel any worse. I think you know it. I think everybody knows it now and then. but I think I have known it pretty often, too often.”
― Charles Bukowski, Tales of Ordinary Madness

I think Miranda may have channeled Bukowski … do you?
“Bluebird” by Miranda Lambert
So I like the sentiment, even if the line breaks are wacky. But I prefer Mary Oliver’s bluebird.

Bukowski’s punctuation and line breaks have always irked you a bit :-))

I have to say this is one of my all time favorites from the old master, kind of reminds me of a counterpart to Johnny Cash’s ‘The Beast In Me’. I feel like at any given time a man has two extremes of nature in his soul, Man the destroyer and man the protector. We are at our best when we have the right timing bringing either one to the surface. Again love this poem:) Thanks.
