“The Sweetness of Dogs” by Mary Oliver

What do you say, Percy? I am thinking
of sitting out on the sand to watch
the moon rise. It’s full tonight.
So we go

and the moon rises, so beautiful it
makes me shudder, makes me think about
time and space, makes me take
measure of myself: one iota
pondering heaven. Thus we sit, myself

thinking how grateful I am for the moon’s
perfect beauty and also, oh! how rich
it is to love the world. Percy, meanwhile,
leans against me and gazes up
into my face. As though I were just as wonderful
as the perfect moon.

    1. As much as you love nature and gardening, M, I think you’d love Mary’s work. Dog Songs is her most recent book of poetry, but all of her stuff is blissful. Wild Geese, the first poem I shared here on Jan. 1, is one of my favorites.

I’ll retweet something from a Twitter acct that shares only Mary quotes so you can check out more of her work on their page. xo

    1. One will not wake you in the middle of night asking to go out. But one will not wag its tail in glee whenever you enter the room as if you’d been gone forever either. I say hedge your bets and get both.
